Private Functions

Booking Terms and Frequently Asked Questions

Can we hire your function room for our party?

Yes, absolutely!

We have a separate building comprising the main Gallery Function Room, decorated with art work from local artists and the Function Bar with its own private part-covered terrace. The building has its own self-contained facilities. This area is available to hire either on its own or just in part, subject to availability. The function bar has completely separate facilities and infrastructure from the main pub and will be set up, stocked and staffed for each function.

What about training events, meetings and community activities?

With plenty of parking and a dedicated private space, our function room is ideal for training events, meetings and seminars. We can provide tea and coffee on arrival, lunch, snacks - whatever you need! Please get in touch to discuss your specific requirements.

We would love to host community events and classes in our function room during weekdays. Get in touch for more information.

What about the bar?

Although the function bar is well stocked, we cannot have real ale on draught, but this can be purchased from the main bar and brought over. However, if you know your party are an ale-drinking group, please let us know in advance and we can see if we can sort something out!

How many people can we have at our event?

For a sit-down meal, we can comfortably accommodate up to 80 people. For buffet or drinks-only events, we set a limit of 120 people.

Each function is different and we set up our function room according to the guests’ requirements for anywhere between 30 and 120 guests. Please provide us with an accurate number of guests so that we can ensure the bar and cellar are adequately stocked, the room properly set up and the correct number of staff are available.

Can I decorate the room?

Of course! You can add all of your own touches to the room and we will be happy to give you access to decorate, depending on our other bookings and events.

If you wish to decorate tables please let us know in advance as often these are the last thing we will set up, so it will be good to meet your expectations.

Please note, anything you bring must be taken away either on the night or the following morning to avoid it being thrown away.

When can we arrive and how late can we stay?

You can arrive at the booked time, but if we do not have a booking prior to yours, you and your guests are welcome to arrive a little earlier. Guests can always come to the main bar beforehand to grab a drink whilst they wait for everything to be ready.

You will normally be expected to leave at the end of your hire period. For evening functions, bar service stops usually 11pm or 11.30pm, and we ask the room to be fully clear 30 minutes after that.

What about food and drinks?

We can provide all of the food and drinks that you might need for your event, so you don’t have to bring in anything of your own, except a birthday or wedding cake. However, should you wish to bring in outside catering for your event, we ask for a small £25 fee to cover the cleaning up afterwards. We also do not accept any responsibility for the food that is brought in, especially with regards to allergies.

We provide a range of food including hot and cold buffets, hog roasts and a full sit-down meal. Please let us know what sort of thing you are looking for when you get in touch and we can discuss and agree your exact requirements. We will need your exact numbers two weeks prior to your event.

Our most popular catering service for a party is our hot and cold buffet. We can serve cold table platters at 7pm and our hot buffet at 8.30 pm. In order to maintain the highest quality, and to comply with legal food standards regulations our buffets remain available until around 9.30 pm and then all food and plates will be cleared away to keep the place clean and tidy for dancing!

What about entertainment… bands and discos and stuff?

We have got a DJ that we can recommend for you to hire for £250 (depending on availability) or you are completely welcome to sort your own disco out. And, of course, if you want to get a band or juggler or anything in between, please do so.

If you just want to bring a playlist and plug in and boogie, then we have an in house music system that you can use.

Can I get married at the Black Bull?

We are not currently licensed to hold wedding ceremonies at The Black Bull, but you can have your full wedding reception here - including welcome drinks, sit-down‘ wedding breakfast’ and then an evening reception. Get in touch to discuss your requirements.

How do we book and do you need a deposit?

We can place a provisional booking for you at any time. To secure the booking we need to agree any potential food options, number of guests and arrival times. We then ask for full payment one week before the event.

Should you cancel within one week of your event, we will not be able to return the monies already paid. However, we can move to another date free of charge.

Should you cancel within 48 hours of the event, no payments will be refunded and the event will not be able to be moved free of charge.

What about a damage deposit?

All parties and events are different and whilst we all hope that your guests will behave responsibly and take care of our property, occasionally things go wrong and something gets damaged. As the person hiring the room is responsible, depending on your event, we may ask you for a £100 security and damage deposit against damage to our property, and excessive cleaning . Don’t worry about this - we’ve very rarely taken anything out of a deposit and we don’t expect you to leave the place spotless - just have a good time and don’t break anything!

The deposit will be returned by bank transfer after the room has been inspected and cleaned, so this may take a couple of days. Please don’t ask for it back on the night as this will not be possible.

We’ve heard you have bedrooms too - can we book them all?

If you are having an event and wish to take all of our five bedrooms, please speak to us and we can negotiate a block booking so that your friends and family are all staying together.

How do I get in touch?
